Bach and Before for Strings is a versatile collection of 19 Bach chorales. The chorales range in difficulty from easy to very sophisticated and are suitable for year two through high school string orchestras. Great for warm-up and teaching, as well as performance. Each chorale is presented in the Kjos Multiple Option Scoring System with all four voice parts (soprano, alto, tenor, and bass) presented in each part book. This allows for unprecedented teaching opportunities. Unison playing will help develop the quality of string orchestra's sound, and is the foundation of playing in tune. AS additional parts are added, students learn the nuances of harmony and expressive playing. Students love playing chorales, because they sound so good! Teachers will love using the power of unison playing and four part harmony to develop superior intonation and expressive playing in their string ensembles.

About Bach and Before for Strings

Bach and Before for Strings, presented in the Kjos Total Option Scoring format, contains the same 19 chorales as Bach and Before for Band. Newly set in 'string-friendly' keys, the string book cannot be used in conjunction with the band book. However, the book does provide material that is easily tailored to all string ensembles. Because each part book includes all four voice parts (soprano, alto, tenor, and bass) there are unlimited opportunities to introduce unison playing to the string orchestra. Unison playing is the most efficient way to improve the overall quality of a string orchestra's sound, and is the foundation of playing in-tune. When a string orchestra plays in unison, it is playing in several octaves simultaneously, and in-tune octaves are the very basis of superior intonation!

In addition to this, as the voice parts are individually rehearsed and learned, the students discover that all voice parts of a chorale are important. When played in four-part harmony, the chorales become naturally expressive, because all students know all four parts and they understand which voice should predominate at any given time. Students love playing chorales, because they sound so good!

The chorales range in difficulty from very easy to very sophisticated and are suitable for year two through high school string orchestras. This is the perfect book for helping students master the important concepts of chorale performance.
