Composed by Burton Goldstein. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 36 pages. Burton Goldstein Music #5001041. Published by Burton Goldstein Music (A0.1035261).

Aspen Quartet was written while a fellow at the Aspen Institute for Advanced Compositional Studies under Jacob Druckman and Bernard Rands. It has been performed by the Arditti Quartet at the L.A. County Arts Museum, by XTET in Los Angeles and by the Chroma Quartet in Brussels and has been released on an Albany Records CD.

In this quartet, I was concerned with two things. I wanted to make the implied harmony of a single line gradually more explicit as other lines 'sprouted' from it. And I was seeking new ways to express rhythms which would be both more complex than those in my earlier pieces, but simpler for the musicians to perform. The result was that the surface of the Aspen Quartet consists, for the most part, simply of sixteenth notes, the complexity coming from the changing ratio of phrase lengths heard simultaneously.
