English.

Ralph Ford has scored a jubilant overture for your young band. Even though this one sounds difficult, it comes together easily once the unique driving rhythms are conquered. There is broad use of diverse percussion textures and powerful melodic material. (4:38).

This piece would be played best by an advanced middle school or beginning high school ensemble. The first part of the piece is in a fast 5/4, followed by a slow melodic part in 4/4. The main theme is repeated after the slow section until the end of...

the piece, with minor variations, until the fairly climactic ending. All of the high winds share similar parts, as do the high brass and bass instruments. Melodic content is traded back and forth between the instruments in each group to keep the piece interesting. Every instrument has a moving part at some point, and the style of the piece makes it fun and challenging at the same time. I recommend that the faster 5/4 sections be conducted in 10/8 (3+3+2+2), as it makes more sense with the way the melody and bass lines are accented.

I played this once for all-county back in the eighth grade on the alto saxophone. It was so invigorating and inspiring... It was certainly the most fun to play at the concert.

  • October 16, 2007 I like this song

I'm in the eighth grade band at Kettle Moraine Middle school and I enjoy playing this peice. I don't find it too challenging, but it isn't easy either, which makes it more fun to play.

  • April 10, 2007 GREAT SELECTION!

I am in the 7th grade band at Red Lion Junion High School. We are playing this piece for our spring performance of 2007. It is a wonderful piece. Quite challenging. Our music teacher said this was the first year he got 7th and 8th graders eligable to play this...

. The piece sounds magnificent! I recomend this for more of the advanced middle school bands! Try it out!I believe that our band sounds EXACTLY like the sound clip for this song. With some extra almost any band can perform this!
