I like to play short pieces, for cello : fantasie pieces from Schumann, Fauré, Saint-Saens (allegro appassionato, the swan)....

This book contains almost every work Fauré composed for the solo cello--they only lack the sonatas. These are all excellent compositions with wide emotional range and depth--really the best stuff from that Era. For the intermediate cellist, take a look at "Sicilienne," and if you feel especially good...

"Élégie." For the advanced cellist, try "Papillon."
