A short section of the melody is given to solo violin for a chance to highlight your concertmaster's expressiveness and lyricism. The original key of E minor was lowered to D minor to allow the violins to play entirely in 1st position and to make the melodies lie better for the other instruments. A perfect choice for a slow baroque piece with great expressive possibilities.
