America is one of those that is strongly identified with Bernstein's score. He was an amazingly gifted composer, conductor, and educator. America is in the form of a huapango which uses rhythm patterns combining 6/8 time in two and in three for a strong, fast driving style. It is not an easy rhythm, but it quickly grows on the players. The piece is familiar to most players, so most of it should come naturally. It is set by John Gibson for a full clarinet choir: Eb Soprano, Bb Soprano 1-2-3, Alto clarinet (with an alternate 4th Bb part), bass clarinet, and either BBb or EEb contra.
