Writtenas part of a cycle of pieces celebrating Japanese mythology, thissolo for unaccompanied alto flute depicts the goddess Amaterasu. She is seen asnot only the goddess of the sun, but also of the universe. The nameAmaterasu derived from Amaterumeaning "shining in heaven." The Emperors of Japan areconsidered to be direct descendants of Amaterasu.

Themusic grows gradually in boldness, brightness, and animation. Therhythm makes use of a unique notation system which allows theperformer a degree of say in the creation of the landscape, just asAmaterasu helped to paint the landscape of Japan. The pitches arederived from traditional Japanese pentatonic scales.

Intermediate level, suitable for any occasion. Unaccompanied alto flute.
