The AIR AND VARIATIONS on which this work is based was composed by Handel for the harpsichord. Many will recognize the AIR as the one on which Brahms based his VARIATIONS AND FUGUE ON A THEME BY HANDEL, Opus 24. Brahms' Variations, however, were entirely his own and none of the Handelian Variations are even suggested in his work. The original form of Handel's Variations is retained as nearly as possible in this present version. A certain amount of expansion was obviously necessary, especially since the original, like much of Handel's keyboard music, is very thinly written. Every addition, however, has been based upon some passage in the original. In all of the elaboration an attempt has been made to retain the Handelian spirit. The idea of presenting the AIR AND VARIATIONS in this form was suggested by the quality of the AIR itself, which has all the characteristics of a good trumpet tune. Even the VARIATIONS required little change to fit modern trumpet technique; some, in fact, stand exactly as in the original. It is my hope that this work will give cornetists and trumpeters a type of ensemble piece which has hitherto not been available, and that it will encourage them to look further for material in the music of the eighteenth and earlier centuries. All the repetitions may be omitted. The piano part should be clearly heard at all times. Other details of performance may well be left to the skill and discretion of the players. The work should be programmed as: AIR AND VARIATIONS IN B-FLAT - G.F. Handel - R.F. Goldman.
