These two pieces were Shostakovich's first attempt at writing music for string quartet, and they are arrangements of some of his previous works. The Allegretto is from a humorous polka from his ballet "The Age of Gold," and the Adagio is a haunting elegy from his opera "Lady Macbeth...

of the Mtsensk District." Although these pieces were early works of Shostakovich, the originals and the arrangements show the brilliance of the composer. The two pieces provide great contrast are as fun to play as they are to listen to. And they are not as challenging as Shostakovich's later full string quartets. A great choice.
