The Sixth Symphony, op. 59, is Vierne's last major work conceived for the organ of Notre-Dame. Besides the Quatre poèmes grecs, op. 60 (for voice and harp or piano) and the Ballade du dsespr, op. 61 (for tenor and or-chestra or piano), merely the somber Stèle pour un enfant dfunt, op. 58, no. 3, and the Messe basse pour les dfunts, op. 62, were written for organ in the period that followed. In the manuscript - it is the last organ work that he wrote down himselfl - Vierne dated the Symphony ”Roquebrune, 15 ]uly-15 September 1930.” During that summer, which he spent at the Richepin family's country house in Carnolès near Menton on the Mediterranean, Vierne also played an organ concert in the cathedral in Monaco? The Symphony was published at the beginning of September of the following year.
