6 Suites for Violoncello Solo BWV 1007-1012 Cello Solo by Johann Sebastian Bach Cello Solo - Sheet Music
By Johann Sebastian BachThe most important source for Bach's Cello Suites is a copy made by his wife Anna Magdalena because the autograph is no longer extant. As further copies show, the actual musical text is scarcely problematic. However, the slurs, which are particularly important for string instruments, are very inexact and compel the editor to make difficult decisions. Our practical edition, HN 666, is in two parts. It not only offers the Urtext edition – with preface and critical commentary – but also a part for playing. The new study edition contains the Urtext part, but in addition offers a reproduction of Anna Magdalena's copy. This means that both cellists and music lovers alike are able to form their own opinion about the much discussed problems.

If you are a more advanced cellist looking for an edition that you can use to study and formulate your own decisions on bowing, fingerings and style, this is the one for you. It is free from the over editing you get in many other editions. The 'clean' score gives you a nice blank slate to study and discover. However, if you are more intermediate, you might find this one rather sparse and like the fingering and bowing suggestions of other editions. It comes with two copies, a lightly edited version and the urtext. The edited version has some good suggestions on fingerings for many of the most difficult passages. The type face is very clear and easy to read. It has become the exclusive version that I use for practicing and performing the Bach Cello Suites.

The edition is clearly type-set and is clear to read. However the description is wrong. There is no reproduction of Anna Magdalena's copy in this edition that was supplied to me.
