50 Victorian Pieces demonstrates clearly the brilliance of the great Victorian composers Stanford, Parry, S.S. Wesley, Henry Smart and W. T. Best. Smart was a prolific composer and brilliant improviser, whilst Best was known internationally for his performing genius. Stanford, Wesley and Parry need little introduction. All made remarkable contributions to English music, both sacred and secular. Although often compared unfavourably with their French counterparts, the composers in this book all share an unusual depth of expression and feeling. As voluntaries the pieces are unequalled. Congregations will derive much pleasure from their inspiration and craftsmanship.

    Difficulty Level:
  • October 19, 2007 A practical problem

This book contains a number of attractive and eminently playable pieces - very suitable as voluntaries at church services. My only quibble is a practical one. The book is very strongly bound, which means that you need a number of paper clips/clothes pegs etc to hold the page open. As...

some of the pieces extend over several pages, you have problem. The quick one-handed flip we all use when playing, is out of the question!
