Roger Sessions' Five Pieces for Piano are the final piano pieces of this complex American master. In the tradition of late Beethoven bagatelles or the autumnal Brahms cycles, these concise movements compact intense musical concerns into short worlds. By turns elegaic, rhythmically driving, and whimsical, the pieces reflect Sessions' lifelong...

care for intricate, harmonically challenging counterpoint, constantly unfolding line, and taught construction. I have a special affinity for these works: during their composition in the mid 70's, I was a student of Sessions at Juilliard, and saw them both in pencil manuscript and after they were published. Sessions' close composer friend Luigi Dallapiccola is ther dedicatee, and died during the time of their creation. For the pianist wanting to investigate this composer's piano music in a more concise genre, the Five Pieces are ideal. They deserve a prominant place in the Modernist American canon.
