Oboe

Wonderful book for intermediate oboe and saxophone study. This book works the fingers and the lower register (pinky keys) that so rarely get a workout. Excellent for oboe and saxophone. Highly recommended.

I agree with the other reviewers. Good challenging stuff for high school or college oboe study. My only complaint is that after working on 5 or 6 of these etudes (and there are 48 altogether) they become stylistically monotonous and homogenous. I like to have my students study some of...

the Rubank Selected Studies stuff too, since that book contains works by different composers (including Ferling). Still, this book is worthwhile for anyone who wants to be an accomplished oboist. I would recommend mixing it up a bit though.

These are great. Some of them are a real challenge at the marked tempos. I've had the book for years and I still go back to it regularly to work on fast articulated passages and technique in the more difficult keys.The slower etudes are a test in endurance...

These are great studies that are a huge benefit to study. I know a professor that auditioned for military band, and one of the sightreading exercises was, indeed, a Ferling etude. There is an etude in every key, along with a few excerpts to play. The only set back is...

that the etudes are NOT progressive. That is to say: the difficulty of the 4th etude could very well be greater than the difficulty of the 10th one. However, I think this is a great addition to any saxophone or oboe player repertoire. Buy this book, read through it. It's great

There is not much to say except that this book is used in every high school and college teaching oboe or saxophone. It simply is the standard for excellence.
