Composed by George Gershwin (1898-1937). Masterworks; Piano Collection. Alfred's Classic Editions. Advanced level piece for the Piano Solo event with the National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC) Festivals Bulletin 2008-2009-2010. Standards and 20th Century. Single piece. 12 pages. Alfred Music #00-PS0043. Published by Alfred Music (AP.PS0043).

Item Number: AP.PS0043

ISBN 9780769260099. 9x12 inches. English.

These three short preludes show Gershwin's mastery of the melding of jazz and classical idioms. The Allegro ben ritmato e deciso is filled with rhythmic, syncopated rhythms and is a showpiece for bravura performance. Andante con moto e poco rubato is a lyric blues with ostinato-like accompaniment, interspersed with bridge material. Allegro ben ritmato e deciso, the brilliant closing to the set, displays dramatic writing with craggy rhythms and exciting syncopation. A powerful concert work.

Luv this music. I learnt the preludes years ago with an old tape recording of Gershwin himself playing. Many people use arpeggiation for large chords, please don't. Learn to "crush" chords or rearrange notes. Do swing quavers in no.2, it's not ragtime.

i know how to play the first prelude and i enjoyed it thoroughly. Its a very challenging piece and there is that sense of fulfillment once you learn how to play gerswhins piece.Im still working on the second and third prelude.

This is wonderful music but I'm finding it very difficult: times are tricky, keys with lots of sharps and flats, reach. I know what it's supposed to sound like and I'm very far from that. But it is so worth the effort. I'm using these preludes...

to get my game back on the piano - haven't played in many years, but the goal is worth it with this music. Definitely not for beginners!

Innovative, inspiring, challenging and rewarding. While in the Gershwin style, there is definitely some slight Debussy influence here. I'd recommend this trio of preludes to anyone looking for something different.
