Composed by Tom Johnson. Theory Book. Paperback. Two-Eighteen Press #TJ138. Published by Two-Eighteen Press (2E.TJ138).

Other Harmony, subtitled beyond tonal and atonal, summarizes tonality in terms of Rameau, Euler, and Mazzola, and atonality via Allen Forte's The Structure of Atonal Harmony and also presents the ideas of five theorists from the 1950s, whose ideas are quite important and often neglected: Olivier Messiaen, Josef Hauer, Josef Schillinger, Nicolas Obouhov and Nicolas Slonimsky. The book goes on to consider the subject from a more general, more mathematical point of view, such as one can find in Johnson's own compositions, but also in the music of Bartok, Shostakovich, and so many other composers who have gone beyond tonality and atonality. Without suggesting specific in-the-style-of exercises, each chapter recommends assignments enabling the students to explore many ways of constructing and ordering harmonies.
