Viktor Kalabis, born in 1923, is one of the most important contemporary Czech composers and is president of the Bohuslav Martinu Foundation in Prague. At the center of his work are six important string quartets. The V. Quartet (1984) was influenced by Marc Chagall's pictures: In the first movement, many parts remind of the "flying violinist", a common element in Chagall's pictures, in the third movement the violinist plays "on the roof" - also a well-known one Chagall motif. The work contains threatening sounds of the evil world, moments of deep sadness, but also spontaneous joy and impetuous temperament as an expression of unbroken joie de vivre. All movements show Kalabis' formal mastery and sense for the virtuoso handling of the string instruments.
