Composed by Richard Montalto. 20th Century,Contemporary. 91 pages. Maximal Music #4845937. Published by Maximal Music (A0.597654).

Possum Town Prelude was composed in June, 2013. as a joint commission by the Starkville-Mississippi State University Orchestra and the Columbus Arts Council. The work was premiered in Columbus, Mississippi in September, 2013. "Possum Town" was the informal name of Columbus before its incorporation in 1821.

The through-composed work presents three musical ideas, representing various aspects of life in Possum Town. The first theme represents a moist, serene, summer morning, familiar to all who live in the South. The light, lyrical second theme represents the deep love of tradition infused in the spirit of Possum Town. Theme 3 is assertive and rhythmic, symbolizing the acknowledgement of contemporary culture in the increasingly modern Columbus.

Performance time: 8’
