Turtle Dove (Turkle Dove) by Traditional Spiritual 4-Part - Digital Sheet Music

By Traditional Spiritual

Turtle Dove or "Turkle Dove" is a joyful song that was often sung at weddings before the emancipation when people had to jump over a broom to marry. It was said to be sung by the angels when you got to Heaven, and "sa-sa-la-do" is the solfege of the angels' song. The turtle dove is Noah's dove, and a 'do-do' is an African lullaby. This song was first recorded by gospel singer, Bessie Jones. She learned it from her grandfather, Jet Sampson, an ex-slave who was born in Africa and died in 1941 at the age of 105. Numerous other pop and folk singers have performed this song, including the Grateful Dead, Andrew Calhoun & Fred Campeau, Lee and Sarah Atkinson, and Caroline Aiken. Here, it is presented for 4-part a cappella choir.
