Both pieces from the Romantic Era are established band classics, popular with high school and college ensembles. This setting is written for groups ranging from college ensembles to professional quintets and is perfect for recitals, contests, competitions, weddings, special events, background-dinner-music gigs, and educational outreach performances. It is a short, engaging piece that can break up a long program and give the ears a brief hiatus from some of the heavier pieces on the program. This arrangement was written for clarinet quartet using an Eb; however, an alternate Bb part is included. This is a very Italian march; take your time and use the rubato where marked. The MP3 recording includes all the rubato. Bring a taste of Italy to your special music events with this band classic transformed here into a charming clarinet quartet. NOTE: the placement of the pick-up notes in Cl. II & Bs. Cl. in mm 39 has been debated. I decided to opt for the earlier placement as it sounds more interesting and dynamic to me. But, you can also play these notes at the end of the measure as well; you would just need to wait one whole beat and leave out the quarter note.
