For those tired of all the Christmas solo books and are searching for something more sophisticated, 14 Advanced Christmas Favorites is the answer. Arranger Sean OLoughlin has created a volume of distinctive and elegant arrangements of 14 classic Christmas carols for the more advanced player. All are fully orchestrated with downloadable audio recordings that will enhance every performance, especially in church or in concert. It is a unique collection that is both challenging and satisfying to your musical needs. You wont want to be without this special new product this holiday season.
Advanced Christmas Favorites is a unique collection of new and creative arrangements for the accomplished performer. Whether it is being the featured soloist at a sacred service or performing for family and friends at home, this collection is sure to be a crowd pleaser in any situation. The selection of songs includes a variety of exciting, fast paced settings as well as soft and tender treatments. There are even hints of classical pieces sprinkled into the texture here and there. In drawing from my experience of orchestrating for some of the countrys leading professional orchestras, I brought a truly symphonic approach to these traditional holiday favorites. To that end, this collection also features high-quality, play-a-long recordings created by Carl Rydlund, a colleague of mine who works extensively as an orchestrator on major motion pictures in Hollywood. Select your own Christmas favorite and get ready to make your orchestral debut at Symphony Hall!

The title is deceiving - the arrangements are more suited for a solid intermediate level ability. Range is never above G, keys are simple and tempos are moderate. There are a few pieces requiring lip slurs in thirds or fifths, but nothing outrageous. As other reviews have noted, the arrangements can...

be difficult to follow as they are mostly strings without a well defined beat. Most tempos are fairly well set in the piece so your best bet is to get your foot tapping in time during the intro. and try to religiously follow it. It would have been helpful to add the 'demo' tracks for each piece.

  • December 04, 2017 The trumpet parts are fun to play

The trumpet parts are fun to play but not having the option of listening to what the carols with the solo part sound like or having an accompaniment score makes it frustrating to play.

  • November 23, 2017 Arrangements are OK, BUT.....

The main problem here is there is no piano accompaniment! The CD has backing tracks only; you can't listen to the solo and accomp. to see what the whole thing sounds like. That being said, the accomp. tracks are nicely recorded orchestral arrangements which may be fun to play...

with at home. But when it comes down to the nitty gritty and you are looking for something to play in church, using a CD player or sound system may be frowned upon, as it was in my case...banned. I wouldn't call this "advanced", either. A better choice would be the Curnow "Great Carols", which I have used for years. It has a piano part as well as CD, and the arrangements are great.
