12 Fantasies for Violin

By Georg Philipp Telemann

Chamber Violin
Composed by Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767). Score. With Standard notation. TWV 40:14-25. Wiener Urtext/Vienna Urtext #UT050415. Published by Wiener Urtext/Vienna Urtext (PR.UT050415).

ISBN 9783850557818.

The 12 Fantasies were part of a total of 72 fantasies for various instruments written by Telemann in the 1730s. Editor Bernhard Moosbauer calls them "true gems" and "carefully modelled jewels," and is happy to discuss the form factor and espressivity of this "important and exemplary contribution" to the instrument. He might even argue their worth against the overshadowing Sonatas and Partitas by J.S. Bach. Moosbauer has consulted the first print and a contemporary complete manuscript copy to assemble his urtext of the 12 Fantasies, including a thorough background and discussion of the works, a long with critical notes. As always, attention is given to page layout to produce a pracitcal performance score.

This edition is perfect and the 12 Fantasies themselves are truly Wonderful!Number 1 is a solid intermediate piece. Numbers 2-6 are tougher, then 7-12 are again less demanding but so beautiful. The edition itself is great. Perfect page turns and layout, plenty of space, razor-sharp printing...
