The music to Schweyk is not accompanying stage music in the traditional sense. It is much more: it is the most important of all my compositions to plays by Brecht.
(Hanns Eisler)

The music to “Schweyk” is not accompanying stage music in the traditional sense. It is much more: it is the most important of all my compositions to plays by Brecht.

(Hanns Eisler)

Like many works created in exile, this play by Brecht, written in California in the summer of 1943, had to wait many years for its first performance. This took place in Warsaw on 17 January 1957. Eisler composed the instrumental interludes for the production in Frankfurt am Main in 1959. The “Scenes from the Higher Spheres” were composed in 1961 for the French premiere in Lyon.
