The Cantabile in D major for violin and piano (M.S. 109) is one of Paganini's most popular and famous compositions. This brief piece - a short tripartite 'aria variata' - is particularly spontaneous and lighthearted, reminiscent of the lyricalnature of the Italian bel canto tradition. It has an intimate feel to it, bringing us closer to this composer from Genoa.
The main aim of this critical edition, based on the autograph source held at the Casanatense Library in Rome and collated withall the key printed editions, is to provide both performers and scholars with a text containing a philologically authoritative original reading.
Das Cantabile in D-Dur fur Violine und Klavier (M.S. 109) ist eines von Paganinis bekanntesten und beruhmtesten Kompositionen. Das kurze Stuck - eine dreiteilige 'aria variata' - ist besonders heiter und impulsiv und erinnert an die poetischeNatur des italienischen Belcanto. Es verstromt eine gewisse Vertrautheit, die einem den Komponisten aus Genua naher bringt.
Die hier vorliegende kritische Ausgabe, die auf einer handschriftlichen Quelle aus der Biblioteca Casanatense in Rom beruht,die mit allen anerkannten Ausgaben des Werkes verglichen wurde, setzt sich zum Ziel, sowohl Violinisten als auch Gelehrten erstmals ein Studienexemplar zur Verfugung zu stellen, das maximal nahe an der Originalkomposition ist.

Questa breve pagina, una piccola "aria variata" di struttura tripartita, e caratterizzata da grande spontaneita eleggerezza che richiamano il lirismo di impronta belcantistica. Essa rappresenta l'aspetto piu intimo del musicista genovese.La presente edizione critica, basata sulla fonte autografa depositata presso la Biblioteca Casanatense di Roma e collazionata con tutte le piu importanti edizioni a stampa, ha come scopo principale quello di consegnare sia agli interpreti sia aglistudiosi un testo che riproponga la lezione originale in modo filologicamente attendibile.
