For 300 years (c1400-1700) the "diploma" for a viola da gamba player was to perform Variations on "La Folia", either own improvisations or someone else's composition.
To today the theme remained popular, among the composers who wrote variation on it are Vivaldi, Corelli, Marin-Marais up to Rachmaninov, and of course many Spanish composers from 1400 to the 20th century.
Mauro Giuliani was an Italian guitarist and studied in Vienna composition with Beethoven - as students they participated together in a fun group composition!
I elected the variations most effective for cello and left the ones out showing off typical guitar "tricks'. I particularly like the
strong rhythms and contrasts in the last variation.
