Composed by Robert Burns. Arranged by John McGonigle. Celtic. Score. 7 pages. John McGonigle #3479767. Published by John McGonigle (A0.940913).

This fun setting tells the tale of "Duncan Gray" as he attempts to woo Maggie around Christmastime.  It has been arranged to showcase the skills of both singer and accompanist (the singer possessing excellent story telling ability, and the pianist sufficient technique and flair to enhance the humour via the 'classical' links). The musical mayhem kicks off with C.P.E. Bach's 'Solfeggieto'.  The intro to verse 2 reflects Duncan's naivety (Prokofiev's 'Peter and the Wolf'). In the link to verse 3 the accompanist dares Duncan to jump over the water (Strauss 'Blue Danube’). After Duncan states that Maggie can go to France we hear a snippet of 'La Marseillaise'.  Interwoven into verse 4 is Massenet's 'Meditation' as poor Maggie takes ill. In verse 5 she cuts her losses and makes a play for Duncan (Tchaikovsky 'Romeo and Juliet'), and when Duncan finally comes up trumps we hear a nod to Handel (‘See the conquering hero returns’) before they tie the knot with Mendelssohn's 'Bridal March'! When performed in a Burns Supper there is the option to invite the company to join with the refrain - "Ha, ha, the wooin' o’t".
