Ambience originated from an experiment to write a series of chord progressions for a
choir, and is originally titled Serenity. It eventually developed into a piece with
tertiary form, and the texture became unsuitable for choir (though the choir version
was still uploaded to IMSLP). I therefore decided to arrange the piece for string
orchestra. The work was completed in September 2008. To facilitate the premiere of
the piece in 2010, the piece was further arranged for string chamber.
The piece starts with a series of chord progressions, the original starting point of the
experiment, modulating freely into other keys. The melody and inner parts move from
time to time, and the music gives the listener a feeling of serenity and ambience, as
titled. The tempo gradually quickens to transit to the contrasting rapid section. A
steady theme is accompanied by flowing lines and repeating chord progressions. The
music dies down until the first section is heard again in monody. Sections of silence
provide spaces of tranquillity to the music. The piece ends with an amen-like plagal
