Composed by Elizabeth C. Clephane, Frederick C. Maker. Arranged by Jeremy Yowell. Christian,Easter,Gospel,Sacred,Spiritual. Score and part. 10 pages. Jeremy Yowell #3359395. Published by Jeremy Yowell (A0.778160).

Elizabeth Clephane’s classic hymn text, "Beneath the Cross of Jesus," urges us to contemplate the magnitude of the cross of Jesus Christ. Her writing here is powerful, filled with visual metaphors and symbols - revealing the hymn writer’s thorough knowledge of Scripture. Sadly, Clephane wrote these words only a year before her death at the young age of thirty-nine.

In this duet arrangement, the mournful cello sings this well-known melody with the gentle accompaniment of the piano. Both instruments are equal players in this setting and help to communicate with new meaning the poignant words, urging us (once again) to consider our unworthiness contrasted with Christ’s unfathomable love.
