Three Movements for Cello Quintet (2007)

Three Movements for Cello Quintet was composed during an artist residency in Costa Rica, October 2007. In the rainforest one becomes immediately aware of the abundance and virility of life, and its subsequent decay upon passing. This work explores processes whereby material is "spun out" in many different directions before it is brought to a close. The third movement in particular emulates the decay of a delayed signal-a common electro-acoustic music technique. It does so acoustically through various rhythms, articulations, and dynamics all of which are performed by the ensemble. From around the time of the composition of this work, and Three Pieces for Steel Pans (2007), the notion of decay has been an important metaphor in my work and it is often used as a process of deconstruction, or simplification. Three Movements was commissioned by Dr. Şőlen Dikener a wonderful cellist, a dear colleague and friend at Marshall University.

The entire work is approx. 10:00 in duration and is suitable for intermediate to advanced performers. Performance materials available for purchase from the publisher: mjicmusicpublishing@gmail.com
