Each movement is inspired by (as well as named after) a species of tree, and is intended to evoke an aural image of the tree in the listener. Although Smith's characteristic use of expanded harmony and polyrhythm are ever-present, the moods found within each movement are as varied as the trees they are meant to depict. The final movement, titled Arbor, combines motives of the previous movements into a musical canopy. Movements: I. Pine II. Black Oak III. Weeping Beech IV. Eucalyptus V. Honey Locust VI. Redwood VII. Arbor.
