These two American tunes were greatly influenced by Irish folk music. Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier was popular during the American Revolution and is based upon the Irish turn Shule Aroon. When Johnny Comes Marching Home was written by American bandmaster Patrick Gilmore in 1863 and closely resembles the Irish tune Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye. Both show memorable melodies that have helped sustain their popularity over the years.
