This is probably the best known of all songs associated with sailing and sailors. It has been used in countless movies, cartoons, and television. Arranger Virginia Croft gives us a set of variations on this popular song that is just delightful, with lots of variety and very enjoyable to play.
Young string students love to move their bows, and this music offers a good chance for them to do so. Attack scale passages with vigor whenever they occur to produce a lively dance with many “teachable moments” as the primary tune is passed among the sections. Why not add actual dancers to this hornpipe? What a great way to integrate the fine arts in your school and excite your audience!
