This cantata, composed in 1780, is the third in a set of four secular cantatas appearing between 1778 and 1780. Composed in Stockhom, this cantata was written for Lovisa Augusti, lead singer of the Stockholm Royal Theatre of which Kraus was Kapellmaster. No dedication is evidenced in the source material for this edition, the 1801 copy by Frederik Samuel Silverstolpe. Set to a text by Metastasio, Kraus imaginatively explores the musical rendition of the passions of jealousy and madness. Kraus' mastery of musical and literary composition is united here in a brilliant and elevated work of musical drama.
