In 2015, when the wheels touched down on the Big Island in Hawaii, I completed my goal of visiting all fifty states. Of course, ten years of touring with Cantus gave me a big head start, but the nice thing about traveling for work is that you sometimes go places you wouldn’t think to visit on your own. Along the way, you meet all manners of people, and, for me, it’s deepened my belief in the innate goodness of humanity. From corner to corner of this vast country, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting good people, sharing musical experiences, and taking in vastly diverse landscapes.Recently, I had the opportunity to take a solo road trip from Minnesota to Southern California as I started a new position at California State University San Marcos. As I drove, I was amazed yet again, by the incredible beauty. Until now, I’ve never really lived outside the Midwest, but now coastal cliffs, mountains, and desert are part of my daily landscape vistas. It was during my time exploring this new terrain that the genesis of this text and melody began to take shape. As you sing this text and spin this melody, be grateful for every beautiful view you have in your daily life. We spend so much time chasing the extraordinary that we forget to appreciate what has become ordinary to us.
