Although poems recited in C-1 can be precisely understood by those trained in this technique of translating words into their tonal equivalents, the main purpose of C-1 is not to convey literal meaning but to make it possible to recite poetry without being confined to the conventions and technical limitations of ordinary speech or song. Words and phrases recited in C-1 can be variously shaped by individual performers to convey the overall mood, atmosphere, or meaning of a poem through a variety of "tropes."
