Bach composed the cantata Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch (Truly, truly I say to you), BWV 86, for Rogation Sunday in 1724. In many respects it is a companion piece to the cantata Wo gehest du hin (Oh, where do you go?), BWV 166, performed the previous Sunday. Following tradition, the vox Christi of the opening movement is assigned to the solo bass; Bach, however, composes this arioso as a motet-like "opening chorus" with just one voice. Then we encounter an outpouring of virtuoso figuration in the second movement, an aria for solo violin and alto. The following chorale for solo soprano, two oboes d’amore, and basso continuo is another exquisite gem in the chamber-music style. After a pair of recitative-aria movements, the cantata concludes with a four-part chorale, the only tutti movement.
