After composing two saxophone quartets in the 1990s for the Berlin Saxophone Quartet which they played several times, baritone saxophonist Friedemann Graef commissioned me to compose this piece: Three Psalms for Tenor Saxophone and Pipe Organ. When I asked him about why use the tenor saxophone, he explained that his role in the quartet as baritone saxophonist had no bearing on his desire and ability to play other saxophones. Since this composition included the pipe organ, I chose to create a work that reflected the sacred nature of church. The movements are: I. Praise II. Comfort and Assurance III.
