One of the best known nicknames for a city that is perhaps New York: "The Big Apple".
Already in the thirties of the last century, this name is often used in New York jazz scene. With "The Big Apple" Manhattan was intended. It was the place to be.
Around 1920 Harlem was the center of a thriving black culture. This period is known as the "Harlem Renaissance". In the famous Cotton Club were many concerts of greats like Duke Ellington.
Broadway attracts millions of tourists. Many of them visit here one of the many musicals sometimes for years on the boards are placed.
Broadway splashes sparkles and swings.

Eén van de bekendste bijnamen voor een stad is wellicht die van New York: 'The Big Apple'.
Al in de jaren dertig van de vorige eeuw werd deze naam vaak gebruikt in de New Yorkse jazzscene. Met 'The Big Apple' werd Manhattanbedoeld. Het was 'the place to be'.
Rond 1920 werd Harlem het centrum van een bloeiende zwarte cultuur. Deze periode staat bekend als de 'Harlem Renaissance'. In de beroemde Cotton Club vonden vele concerten plaats van groothedenals Duke Ellington.
Broadway trekt miljoenen toeristen. Velen van hen bezoeken hier één van de vele musicals die soms al jaren op de planken gebracht worden.
