I wrote this piece in the 1990's in the midst of a particularly difficult winter. I had injured my shoulder and was unable to do much except sit at my piano and play, nothing too taxing. It was a winter where I also lost two relatives in a two week span. The mood of this piece is somber, sad. I was frustrated and a bit depressed being unable to play my flute for an entire year while I underwent corrective surgery and therapy. So, I started writing music of my own. I loved playing with the black keys for this piece. It allowed me to express those emotions through music.
