In 1729 Bach composed the double-choir motet Der Geist hilft unser Schwachheit auf for the funeral of Johann Heinrich Ernesti, his direct predecessor as Rector of St Thomas’s School. Ernesti had held the post of Rector for over 40 years, and for St Thomas’s School an era came to an end with his death. The performance probably did not take place in St Thomas’s Church, but in the University church of St Pauli; Ernesti was also professor at Leipzig University.

Der Geist hilft unser Schwachheit auf is the only motet by Bach for which doubling instrumental parts have survived (Choir I: strings, Choir II woodwinds, bc: violone and organ). However, the instrumental parts do not contain the final chorale; perhaps this was not performed in the church, but was sung unaccompanied at the graveside?
