The Spider and The Serpent Piano Solo - Digital Sheet Music
Before I describe this piece and the meaning behind it, let me say first that I don't have anything against those who practice religion, and I actually believe it CAN be quite beneficial to those who practice it, and I generally don't even like to discuss religion with others. That being said, this song discusses a traumatic memory that has ties to Christianity and how some churches can be run on deceit, lies, and manipulation. To give you an idea of the time frame on this, this occurred when I was about 18, shortly after my suicide attempt, much like the song I made from my previous sonata. Without giving out too much information, I will say that something occurred with some individuals at a church that involved extreme lies, manipulation, and deceit, in a way that deeply and irrevocably hurt people I care about. What I will say about the title, "The Spider and the Serpent," on here, is that it represents two different aspects of the type of behavior from the church. The spider represents entrapment and domination through force, and the serpent represents using lies and manipulation. Both of these forms of abuse are extremely harmful. This event completely destroyed my view of religion. I grew extremely angry and bitter at Christianity and the church as a whole, and to be honest, that still hasn't gone away fully, and I'm not sure that it ever will. Having grown up a Christian, and building my identify upon being a Christian when I was younger, this dealt a huge blow to my already extremely distorted self identity. Right now, every time I try to imagine myself in my entirety, it feels like there's just a big fog in the way, and I can't even see myself for who I actually am. Processing this brought up a lot of thoughts and feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness attached to it, which, given the fact that this occurred during an already extremely traumatic time of my life, and the feelings that I felt while processing those other events, isn't super surprising. Looking at the song itself, I will say that there are representations of both spider-like movements and snake-like movements within the song. I'm sure it's probably easy to tell which is which. This song was different in that now I know clearly where I'm gonna have to go next in my trauma processing journey: to address the causes of the fogginess with my self identity and to further explore other religious trauma that is connected to this.
