Léo Délibes (1836 - 1891) gehörte zum Kreis französischer Romantiker und wirkte als Organist, Chordirigent und Professor für Komposition am Konservatorium auf das Pariser Kulturleben ein. LE ROSSIGNOL, im Original für Gesang und Klavier, entstand nach einem alten Gedicht. Es zeichnet sich durch sein melodisch verziertes Echo-Wechselspiel aus und ist eine wirkungsvolle Sopran-Koloratur-Arie. Der niederländische Flötist Ary van Leeuwen (1875 - 1953) lebte in Berlin und Wien, ab 1924 in Cincinnatti. Er arrangierte zahlreiche Werke für die Flöte. 1933 richtete er für LE ROSSIGNOL eine obligate Flöte ein. Sein Arrangement erfreut sich bis heute großer Beliebtheit.
