Said to be based on a Czech folk melody, and originally written as the Carol of the Drum, this French version - "L'Enfant au Tambour" - doesn't mention Christmas at all. Instead, it's the story of a little boy's love for his father - who yesterday followed the soldiers' drums and went off to war. The boy, in his dream, tells the angels that he will give up his most precious possession - his drum - for his father's safe return. The angels, moved by his willingness to sacrifice, tell him that his father will return. He wakes, with his head on his drum. What a great story! What a fabulous song!
