This is a very good piano educational book in that it really helps with the sight reading, key signatures, and learning the keyboard. The piano pieces in it are good sounding for both young and old. The CD that comes with it is very good recording of each piece, and it really helps one to learn the pieces in the book. So, I would highly recommend it to anyone starting out in piano....

This piano book is for very beginners at piano, the CD that comes with it sounds great. But, the pieces in this book are not as well designed and do not sound as beautiful as a much better piano book that I would recommend - Ferdinand Beyer Op.101. The pieces are just to 'childish' in The Joy of First-Year Piano, especially for an older adult beginner. Beyer is much more enjoyable and even has extra 'studies' at the very end of the book. So, I give The Joy of First-Year Piano only 1 star, and Beyer I would give 5 stars because it's a much better book! Try Beyer first. Also, Carl Czerny's Op. 823 & 599 are very good starter books for the bolder student.
