Leopold Godowsky (1870-1938) was one of the most celebrated pianists from the great age of the piano virtuoso that stretched from the middle of the 19th Century to the deaths of Vladimir Horowitz and Sviatoslav Richter. His transcriptions and arrangements, often elaborate and ornamental, have survived the changing winds of fashion, but it is only recently that his own original music has begun to receive the attention it deserves. With the release of this volume, Carl Fischer launches the first collected edition of Leopold Godowsky's Piano works. Volume one concentrates on original material and features Godowsky's monumental hour-long, Sonata in E Minor (1911). This five-movement work is a virtual encyclopedia of piano technique and demonstrates the composer's compositional prowess and intimate familiarity with the music of Chopin, Brahms and MacDowell. Also included are three collections of shorter pieces, Walzermasken, 24 Character Pieces in Triple Meter (1912), Triakontameron, Thirty Moods and Scenes in Triple Meter (1919), Java Suite (1925) and the monumental Passacaglia (1928). As with each volume in the series, The Godowsky Collection, Vol. 1 has a critical/historical introduction by Dr. Milan Sachania.

Sincere Musicians Only
For many people music is a status indicator. They do not know why anyone would want to improve their playing when already an adult. In all my years of playing it has only been when I found myself learning difficult pieces that I learnt anything at all. With these pieces I hope to push the envelope once again. Love the Nocturnal Tangier.

Wonderful collection!
Godowsky's tutelage seemed to have gone unnoticed in the decades following his death. Now, however, his pieces are becoming more available with these Godowsky collections. Godowsky is a fine composer with a truly unique textural sense of composition. Although he may not deserve to be a legendary composer like Bach, or Brahms, some of his pieces should become standard repertoire (the studies on Chopin's Etudes, the Passacaglia, and many of the transcriptions. This volume contains the long-winded sonata, the thrilling Passacaglia, and the inventive Java Suite along with two sets of waltzes that each contain some delightful musical ideas. This book is massive, over 400 pages, which makes it cumbersome. But in general, it stays open by itself for the middle pages. This book also contains long biographical essays and lots of photographs of the composer. It's a great buy!
