This is an "industrial folk ballad" from the late 19th century. This particular ballad describes the plight of the farmer by bankers and other "industrialists" who take advantage of the farmer through high interest rates, and general under-appreication of the person "who feeds us all." Two verses appear hear, with a key change for the second verse that is upwards a half-step, giving the pianist experience with the important skill of transposition.
