As the title suggests, this quartet is a soap opera in the style of Peter and the Wolf in which the instruments represent characters in this drama. The cello is an alpha male smitten by the lovely 2nd violin, the viola representing her inward person who desires genuine connection. The 1st violin is a second suitor who earnestly cares for her but is much less impressive to her, yet he does his best against a superior rival. Thus the three parts of this piece are character introductions and flirtation, indignation and conflict and finally connection and resolution. It's anyone's guess which she chooses in the end.
