For Beginner Trumpet Trio
As a trumpet teacher with almost 40 years of experience, I encourage my students to begin performing as early in their careers as possible. The problem is that there isn't much music to choose from for the youngest students. I am constantly on the lookout for trumpet music that stays beneath C in the staff, has nothing shorter than quarter-notes and has a length of twenty measures or less.
Since there isn't much available at this skill level, I have been writing such pieces for my own students. The results have been wonderful! Young students who perform so early in their careers have an entirely different approach and eagerness for the instrument.
The Blue Standard is one of those pieces. The composition is only 16 measures long. The first part's highest note is A in the staff and the smallest rhythmic value is a quarter-note. The piece is based on the blues and gives the students a taste for bluesy sounds very early in their progress.
