TAMBOURIN - STRING QUARTET by Jean-Philippe Rameau String Quartet - Digital Sheet Music

By Jean-Philippe Rameau

There is a Third Violin Part as an Alternative to Viola as well as an Optional Contrabass part so the piece can be performed by a String Orchestra.Jean- Philippe Rameau’s ‘Tambourin’ was originally a keyboard arrangement in his E Minor Suite. It has subsequently become well known in its own right. The style of the music evokes a dance rhythm being played by a ‘tambourin’, a small drum found in the Provence region of France. The ‘staccato’ nature of the notation is also suggestive of its original performance on a Harpsichord. The lead player can include gruppettos or grace notes which was common practice in the late Baroque period or in the early 18C .
