Composed by Jean-Philippe Rameau. Arranged by Kamada; Mikio. This edition: audio, pdf. Baroque. 38 pages. ACORDO Sheet Music #1240017. Published by ACORDO Sheet Music (A0.1674399).
Rameau: Suite in A minor, RCT 5 is made up of the first seven pieces from Nouvelles suites de pièces de clavecin. When combined with Premier Livre de Pièces de Clavecin and Pièces de Clavecin avec une méthode, it is considered the fourth of Rameau’s collections for harpsichord. Each suite in the collection is organized by key, and RCT 5 includes only pieces in A minor or A major.
1. Allemande This elegant piece is full of musical dialogue and flows at a gentle, steady tempo. 2. Courante In contrast to the first piece, this one features clear and striking motifs. 3. Sarabande Set in A major, this calm and peaceful piece creates a soothing atmosphere. 4. Les trois mains It begins slowly and gracefully, then grows into a lively and energetic section. From an ensemble perspective, it is a very enjoyable piece to play together. 5. Fanfarinette “Fanfarinette” is said to be a nickname for a girl. The French word fanfaron means “boastful,” so the name may carry a slightly negative nuance. However, the music itself suggests a charming and graceful young girl. 6. La triomphante Since La is a feminine article in French, the title means “the triumphant woman,” likely referring to Fanfarinette from the previous piece. The music is full of energy and drive. 7. Gavotte et 6 Doubles The Gavotte is both elegant and crisp. Each of the six Doubles is made up of continuous sixteenth notes, but each has a different rhythmic pattern. It is the most famous piece in the suite and a lot of fun to play as an ensemble. For the string trio arrangement, the reference score used was Durand: D. & F. 5007, edited by Charles Camille. The arrangement stays as close to the original as possible while making it easier to perform. It is carefully arranged so that ensemble players can enjoy musical interaction and dialogue throughout the piece.
